November 2011 Advice

  • Consider with care how God reaches us in meeting for worship. To every Friend is given a share of responsibility for the meeting. Friends are advised, therefore, to be diligent in attendance at meetings and in inward preparation for them. Let us be concerned to enter reverently into communion with God and with one another, to yield ourselves to the influence of the divine presence. Then what is evil in us may be weakened and the good raised up. God calls each one to the service of the meeting; let us be obedient and faithful, whether by word, by song, or by silent waiting, and let us receive the messages of others in a tender spirit.

October 2011 Advice

  • Take heed, dear Friends, to the prompting's of love and truth in your hearts, which are the leadings of the Holy Spirit. It is God's redemptive love that draws us, a love shown forth by Jesus in all his life, on the cross, and in his abiding presence.

  • Friends are advised to make a quiet place in their daily lives for prayer and communion with God and to be constant in the reading of the Bible and other devotional literature.

  • Let us cherish the seed of God in ourselves and in others, that we may be open to new revelations of truth. Let us look to our meetings to guide and stimulate our spiritual growth.

June 2010 Advice

This month's advices on Personal Responsibility seem particularly appropriate as we prepare for the Summer Season:

  • Choose recreations that increase our vitality, self-awareness, and peace of mind and strengthen our will to create what is good.
  • Make thoughtful use of our time.
  • Guard ourselves and our children in our choice of print, electronic media and other entertainments. Avoid those that promote violence and disrespect for
    human beings.
  • Friends, strive to be courteous and responsible while driving.

May 2010 Advice

We are glad to tell in words as well as deeds the faith that is in us. We seek fellowship with others of our own faith and with all people, realizing the oneness of humanity under God. Our witness is characterized by humility and a willingness to learn from others so that differences can be transcended. In discussion, we must not allow the strength of our convictions to betray us into making misleading or contentious statements. The experiences of others, especially those in circumstances different from our own, help us to discover what is true for us and may help us sense real kinship. We are constantly reminded that Truth is greater than the knowledge any of us has of it. God did not put all the fruit on one branch.

February 2010 Advice

When you are preoccupied and distracted in meeting let wayward and disturbing thoughts give way quietly to your awareness of God's presence among us and in
the world. Receive the vocal ministry of others in a tender and creative spirit. Reach for the meaning deep within it, recognizing that even if it is not God's word for you, it may be so for others. Remember that we all share responsibility for the meeting for worship whether our ministry is in silence or through the spoken word.

November 2009 Advice

Be open to and alert for how the Spirit may be speaking to you in fresh ways,
leading you in new directions. Discern whether your service is inspired and
led by the Spirit. Do not take on tasks beyond your strength or capabilities
or ones that properly belong to someone else.

Test your leadings with your faith community. Look for the truth that comes
from the gathered meeting.
